Vincent Pooch answers the tough questions
When choosing an advisor it's natural that some
tough questions will float through your mind. Let’s get those questions
out in the open:
Does he know what he's doing?
Vincent Pooch replies...
‘Absolutely. While many business issues are unique, there are often
logical steps to follow in analysing situations. It’s how these steps or
building blocks are put together that’s the “art” behind our analytical
work. Insights flow from structured thinking, followed by discussion.’
What are his strengths?
V.P....
‘Analysis, structured thinking and communication. It’s an unusual
combination which our customers find powerful.’
Why unusual?
V.P....
‘Partly because I qualified as an engineer and chartered
accountant. It makes it easier to break down problems and talk about a
range of possible solutions and associated risks'.
Will he listen?
V.P....
Silence is golden! Especially if followed by reflective questioning and
good note-taking so that learnings are captured.’
Does he have enough resources?
V.P....
'Yes. Time management is critical for all of us. And more importantly,
“straight up” communication on deadlines and competencies. We won’t
start a job we can’t finish in line with your expectations (or better).’
Is he working for any of my competitors, customers or suppliers?
V.P....
'This will obviously vary on a case by case basis. Ask the question and
expect a straight answer, committed to in writing if you need it.’
Does he have the connections I need?
V.P....
'Yes! And I use them with great discretion. I don’t assume that I have
all the answers. In my business journey, I continue to meet and exchange
ideas with many people with different skills in different layers of
organisations.’
Is he successful?
V.P....
‘What is success? If judged by repeat business for
growing and financially successful business leaders then he is extremely
successful. The reputation of Key Business Partners is built on repeat
successes.
‘Most customers share our values that success includes a balanced
lifestyle with time for family, community and the great outdoors.’
Why doesn’t he have any grey hair?
V.P....
'Good genetics is the most correct answer!! But it helps to be able to
maintain composure in tight situations; which is greatly helped by good
forward planning.’
